In a major step towards greater transparency and consumer empowerment, telecom service providers (TSPs) across India have now published mobile network coverage maps on their official websites.
This move comes in compliance with a mandate from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) aimed at enhancing the user experience and helping subscribers make more informed choices.
The initiative follows the revised regulations released by TRAI on August 2, 2024.
According to the regulations, every service provider providing access service (wireless) shall publish on its website the service wise geospatial coverage maps in such a manner and format, as may be directed by the Authority from time to time for the geographical areas where wireless voice or wireless broadband service is available for subscription by consumers.
According to the directive, TSPs were required to complete the publication of their network coverage maps by April 1, 2025.
To ensure consistency in format and ease of understanding for users, TRAI also issued detailed technical guidelines on November 22, 2024. These guidelines provided a framework for how the coverage maps should be published and presented.
Following these requirements, TSPs have now updated their websites to include interactive and easy-to-navigate network coverage maps, which allow users to view the availability of wireless voice and broadband services in specific geographic areas—helping them assess service quality before subscribing.
Initially, three telecom companies have updated their website with this tool like Bharti Airtel, RJIL, and Vodafone Idea.
BSNL and MTNL’s network coverage maps are yet to be updated.
