Mutual fund is quite a popular way to invest in the stock market indirectly. Mutual fund managers invest investor money in equities, debt options and securities. In equities, they invest money in different types of funds such as small, mid, large, flexi, hybrid, etc. Equity funds carry more market risk than debt funds, but in the long run, equity funds are considered a better choice for growth. However, as a new investor, if you want to start a SIP or make a lump sum investment, you should also look at long-time past performance of a fund. Though past performance of a mutual fund doesn’t guarantee future returns, the long-term performance of a fund gives quite a clear picture of its stability. Despite the market going through the thick and thin many times in the last decade, many of the funds have performed outstandingly in the same period. In fact, some of the funds have given approximately 10X returns in that period.
