IndiGo London–Mumbai Flight Diverted: An IndiGo flight travelling from London to Mumbai was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Cairo after airspace restrictions linked to rising tensions in parts of the Middle East disrupted its planned route.
Flight 6E2, which took off from London Heathrow late on Sunday night, March 8, was scheduled to land in Mumbai the following morning. But the plane had to change its route due to the closure of certain air routes, and it eventually landed at Cairo International Airport in Egypt.
Passengers Left Waiting at Cairo Airport
This diversion in the route left passengers waiting at the airport for several hours. Among those on board were elderly travellers and families with young children, many of whom had to endure a long wait inside the airport terminal.
Passengers were not immediately allowed to leave the airport after landing because most of them did not possess visas for Egypt. As a result, they were required to remain within the airport premises while arrangements for the onward journey were being made.
Crew Duty Rules Add to the Delay
Airline sources said another major factor behind the delay was the Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rule, an international aviation safety regulation that restricts the number of continuous hours pilots and cabin crew can remain on duty.
By the time the aircraft reached Cairo, the crew had completed their permitted duty hours. Because of this, the flight could not depart immediately for Mumbai and had to wait until the crew completed the mandatory rest period.
Passengers Voice Concerns Online
Meanwhile, many passengers expressed their disappointment, with some sharing their experiences on social media platforms, describing the inconvenience caused by the unexpected stopover and long waits at the airport.
Flight Expected to Resume After Crew Rest
According to reports, the airline is now arranging crew rest (the necessary rest is provided to the crew before continuing the flight) and operational clearance. It is expected that the flight will resume its journey to Mumbai once these arrangements are in place.
Rising Regional Tensions Affect Global Flight Routes
In recent days, escalating tensions and temporary airspace restrictions across parts of the Middle East have forced airlines to alter several international routes. These changes have affected flight schedules and operations, leading to diversions and delays on multiple routes worldwide.
