Public and private sector banks across all states and Union Territories of India remained closed on Monday, January 26, on account of the 77th Republic Day of India, which is a national holiday.
Republic Day is observed as a mandatory bank holiday across the country. As a result, banking operations, including branch-level services, remained suspended for the day. Government offices also remained closed nationwide.
The holiday on January 26 was part of a long weekend in several states. January 23 was a regional holiday in Odisha, Tripura and West Bengal. January 24 was the fourth Saturday, followed by Sunday on January 25, leading into the Republic Day holiday on Monday.
Bank holidays during the week of January 26 to February 1
Banks will continue to observe holidays or disruptions during the week from January 26 to February 1, according to available information.
On Tuesday, January 27, public sector bank operations may be disrupted in some parts of the country. Bank employee unions have announced a nationwide strike on the day to demand a five-day work week. The strike may affect banking services in select regions.
Sunday, February 1, will be a regular weekly holiday for banks across India, as banks remain closed on all Sundays.
Banking services during holidays
Despite the closure of bank branches on national holidays, customers can continue to access online and mobile banking services. Digital banking platforms remain operational unless users are specifically informed about technical or other service-related issues.
For cash-related needs, automated teller machines remain open for withdrawals. Digital payment systems, including mobile applications and Unified Payments Interface (UPI), continue to function normally during bank holidays.
However, transactions involving cheques and promissory notes are not available on bank holidays. These holidays are notified by the Reserve Bank of India under the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which governs such financial instruments.
