The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of a four-lane section on the Sahebganj-Bettiah NH-139W, a key highway connecting Patna with north-western Bihar.The 79-km project, part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, will cost Rs 3,822 crore and is expected to enhance connectivity, cut travel time, and promote regional development.The Sahebganj-Bettiah corridor also links the Buddhist circuit of North Bihar, including Vaishali and Kesariya, improving access for tourism, trade, and local communities.The new greenfield highway is designed for speeds of up to 100 kmph, with an average travel speed of 80 kmph.
Travel time and speed benefits
Officials said the project will reduce travel time between Bettiah and Sahebganj from 2.5 hours to just one hour — a 60% reduction.The new four-lane highway will decongest existing routes, boost long-distance freight movement, and improve road safety.
