Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday, March 25, said India is positioning itself to take global leadership in 6G technology, highlighting the country’s growing strength in telecom innovation and patent development.
Speaking in Parliament, the minister noted that India has steadily advanced across generations of telecom technology — lagging during the 3G phase, catching up in 4G, and moving ahead with 5G. The country is now ready to lead the world in 6G, he said, crediting the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the sector’s progress.
Growing Footprint in 6G Patents
Union Minister Scindia pointed out that India already has a strong stake in 6G-related intellectual property. He said the country is expected to contribute nearly 10 per cent of global 6G patents, with around 4,000 patents filed so far.
He also informed the House that India’s proposal on Ubiquitous Connectivity has received approval from key international telecom bodies, reflecting growing global recognition of the country’s technological efforts.
India 6G Alliance Expanding
The minister highlighted the rapid expansion of the India 6G Alliance, which has grown from 14 organisations to 85. The alliance is working through seven dedicated groups focusing on areas such as spectrum, device technology, components, sustainability, outreach, and use cases.
The progress of these groups is reviewed every quarter by the ministry to ensure that development remains on track.
Push for Research and Innovation
Scindia also spoke about the role of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), set up in February 2024 to strengthen the country’s research ecosystem. The government has earmarked Rs 50,000 crore for the initiative for the 2023–2028 period, with an additional Rs 14,000 crore announced in the budget.
He said the foundation has launched eight major programmes, including research grants, early-career support, inclusivity initiatives, and the creation of Centres of Excellence. Other efforts include innovation tracking, global research partnerships, and a transnational research hub.
In addition, about Rs 300 crore has been allocated to further strengthen research through innovation hubs, fellowships, and international collaborations.
Confidence in Global Leadership
The minister expressed confidence that India’s combined push in telecom and research will help it set new benchmarks globally. He said the country is well on track to emerge as a leader in 6G while building a strong foundation for future innovation.
